PathCon Laboratories Offers Expert Commentary on MRSA

Podcast Delivers Facts on “Super Bug,” Discusses Environmental Testing

NORCROSS, Ga. (Oct. 22, 2007) – PathCon Laboratories (www.pathcon.com), the environmental microbiology experts, has made available a podcast with Brian Shelton, M.P.H.,that discusses Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. Shelton is the president and CEO of PathCon, one of the nation’s most respected outbreak, laboratory and consulting resources.

The informative 6-minute podcast is accessible from the PathCon web site and provides many facts on MRSA, including answers to commonly asked questions, transmission routes and ways to mitigate risks. Shelton is also available to media for interviews related to MRSA.

MRSA is a strain of "Staph" bacteria that is of increasing concern to healthcare officials. It does not respond to commonly used antibiotics.  Recent estimates of deaths due to community-acquired MRSA are alarming.

Shelton has directed numerous high-profile investigations, including those involving E. coli, environmental Mycobacterium, Legionnaires’ disease, and Norovirus. In his work, Shelton was the first to show an association between Legionella concentrations and risk of disease. PathCon’s hazard criteria guidelines for Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks have been adopted by OSHA.

PathCon’s experienced consulting staff includes Dr. Ruth Berkelman, M.D., former Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service; and Dr. J. Donald Millar, M.D., former Assistant Surgeon General and inaugural director of the CDC’s Center for Environmental Health.
